Hart is known today as the author of Miriam Coffin, or The Whale-Fishermen (), a novel that was an important source for Moby-Dick ().. An attorney, school principal, and author of several widely used geography textbooks, Hart traveled to Nantucket sometime . Long Tom Coffin is a character in James Fenimore Cooper’s novel The novel was published ten years before Joseph C. Hart’s Nantucket novel Miriam Coffin or the Whale Fisherman and twenty-seven years before the publication of Herman Melville’s three novels capitalize on Nantucket’s charisma as center of the global whaling industry, .

Addeddate To my knowledge this important instance from Miriam Coffin has never been explored. It is not mentioned in any of the editions of M-D. At least I do not remember it being cited.
