“Clean coal, ”a broad term for technology that can reduce the environmental impact of burning coal, has become a popular political buzzword in the past two U.S. presidential campaigns. DOE's Fossil Energy R&D advances transformative science and innovative technologies that enable the reliable, efficient, affordable, and environmentally sound use of fossil fuels. Fossil energy sources constitute over 80% of the country’s total energy use, and are important to the nation’s security, economic prosperity, and growth.
The book focuses on coal gasification and liquefaction and emphasizes that the processes involved must be carefully understood in order to avoid the environmental impacts of coal use. Attempts have been made to establish a conceptual framework to be used in assessing the health and environmental health impacts of the conversion and utilization. Coal preparation, which may also be called washing, cleaning or processing, is the methodology by which coal feedstocks are upgraded in order to reduce freight costs, improve utilization properties and minimize environmental impacts.
